Skin Secrets - Protect Yourself in the Sun
Wanderlust with Us Issue XX - August 20, 2020
Dining Al Fresco? Playing in the Waves? Nurture Your Skin
We’re spending a lot of time sourcing getaways for clients with mostly outdoor adventures, be it sun-filled beaches or alpine getaways. We're dining outside. We're enjoying our favorite fitness outdoors. We’re all spending much more time in the sun which is why we are prepared to bring you our favorite tips and products to enjoy the sun and protect your skin.
We decided to check-in with one of our favorite client, Dr. Jenifer Lloyd, DO, FAAD from the Lloyd Dermatology Center. Let’s just say, we’ve literally thrown away the products we were ready to tout as Dr. Lloyd gave us an eye-opening overview of how to properly protect our skin.
So, put the top down on the convertible, tee it up at the club, or enjoy an aperitivo at your favorite outdoor café, and use these tips to shield your precious skin.
"In terms of when to wear a sunblock, there are two things to remember... Wear a sunblock every day, not just while on vacation. Use a sunblock as a moisturizer in the morning, not a moisturizer with a sunscreen."
First Know the Basics....Do you know there are two types of sunscreens, chemical and physical?
Know The Difference - Both physical and chemical products keep you from getting sunburn, but the physical blockers keep you from tanning and getting age spots!
Look For These - Physical blockers contain zinc oxide, titanium dioxide and occasionally iron oxide. Iron oxide has also been shown to block the rays from overhead lights and computer screens that can contribute to aging.
Read The Label - The UVA blocker in many sunscreen products contain Avobenzone (Parasol 1789) which can break down when exposed to sunlight and cause skin rashes and ironically, sunburn. As an alternative option, look for Mexoryl, which is a good chemical UVA blocker available in Europe - so stock up on your next visit!

Great for Every Day Use
Everyday Facial Primer - TIZO3 Facial Primer
"This was an aha moment for me when I realized I wasn't using the correct sunblock. Last week I went surfing and I lathered up with a 50+ water proof that only contained chemical blockers, particularly on my hands. I put it on heavily and was in the water for 1.5 hours. Later that night, I noticed I had a line on my hands where my wet suit ended. I realized that without the physical blockers, I was not receiving the full protection I needed from the sun."
- Shelby Donley
Brittany Taylor says, "The Tizo3 brand gets bonus points for being reef friendly so I feel great when I am snorkeling around the world. Now, if only I could jet to Lizard Island and snorkel the Great Barrier Reef!”
Looking For a Make-Up That Also Offers Protection?
Daily Total Protection Powder (Makeup Friendly) - Colorescience Sunforgettable® Total Protection™ Brush-On Shield
Sure, there's a ton of foundations and powders with SPF, but this has has the true ingredients to offer protection and can be worn as a base powder or with your regular make-up.
Dr. Lloyd shares, "This product is always in my purse, beach bag, and car. It is great for reapplication without messing up your makeup. It is also great for the back of my hand when I am driving as it isn’t greasy and doesn’t mess with the leather on my steering wheel."
"Growing up in Arizona, I spent too much time in the sun. I wish I had done this years ago, but I love the fact I can wear this anytime and protect my skin now."

Protect the Kids Too!
Children's Sunscreen - Blue Lizard Sunscreen
Dr. Lloyd recommended this product to us for children as it not only has all the physical sunscreen properties we need but also is ideal for sensitive skin as it has no chemical active ingredients, fragrances, or parabens.
" I personally love using stick sunscreens, as Blue Lizard has, because they glide on easily, rub in clear, and dry smooth so my son can get back to his activities. I especially appreciate the mineral based ingredients in Blue Lizard because I know that what I am putting on my son's body is all natural but still protecting him. - Susan Bowlby-Benson
And When You Overdue It in the Sun...
After Sun Aloe - Sun Bum After Sun Cool Down Gel
"When I got completely sunburned while on the beach in Malibu, I thought I was a lost cause. When I returned to my hotel, Shutters on the Beach, I called down to the front desk and they suggested the Sun Bum After Sun Aloe. I immediately ran down to grab it. After re-applying for 5+ days straight, 3x a day, my burn turned to tan and I never peeled. It also uses Vitamin E and tea tree oil to soothe and hydrate your skin without having the usual slimy feeling of Aloe. I highly recommend using this after a day in the sun!"
