If you don’t think international travel is what you want to do this summer, a wonderful alternative for couples, singles and families is a Western Ranch experience. From the Rivers and forests of Montana, to the mountains of Colorado and the canyons of Utah, there is a home on the range for every budget and activity.


Tofino, Canada

A short float plane ride from Vancouver located on First Nation Land. The glamping tents are luxurious yet rustic and placed strategically with views of the bay, river and forest. Completely remote, the activities include horseback riding, fishing, hiking, kayaking, fabulous food and loads of kids activities. Families fall in love with the experience. Bear sightings top the list.


Darby, MT

Couples, cooking classes, wine tasting, horseback riding, ATV touring, hiking in the Bitteroot Mountains and fly fishing on the river where the movie “The River Runs Through It” was filmed. Each cottage has a golf cart to itself and some have decks with a Jacuzzi from which the stars are bright in the Montana clear sky. Romantic – adults only.


Philipsburg, MT

Amazing lodge, log cabins, and a tented camp on the River! Anything you want. All activities included are fly fishing, archery, horses, hiking, breakfast rides, a bowling alley, Western Saloon – all activities planned specifically for you and your family.


Greenough, MT

There are cabins, 4 bedroom homes each on 5 acres (great for a family get together) 3 tented camps on the river – activities booked separately. A great Spa and Lodge Dining Room or book the Chef in your cabin. Campfires and S’mores galore.


Rawah Ranch

Jelm, CO

Located just south of the Wyoming border. A bit more budget but equally welcoming. Cabins with 2 to 3 bedrooms, central dining room. They have their own horses and fishing guides with the river right at their doorstep. My grand kids came racing into my room one morning jumping with excitement to tell me there was an elk right at our doorstep.


Smith Fork Ranch

Crawford, CO

Located in Colorado, a nice drive from Grand Junction. Choose the River House, 4 bedrooms and right on the river! Have a chef privately or eat on the deck with Mountain views. Activities are horseback riding, fly fishing on the river running by, Clay shooting range with moving targets – the kids loved it- great instructor.


New Mexico

There are 4 locations: Ladder Ranch – an authentic ranch house – perfect for a family spring break with private chef, private guide to arrange experiences just for you. The ranch has rivers and mountains, horses, cattle and fishing.

Vermejo – which is over 550,000 acres of majestic wilderness located in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado beckoning travelers to immerse themselves in the rejuvenating power of wild nature. There are 19 fish-able lakes and over 30 miles of streams, including elk, bison, black bears and mountain lions.

Sierra Grande - A lodge in Truth or Consequences – on the way to the Space Port.

Armendaris - A 360,000 acre property nestled in the Chihuahuan desert.


Dolores, CO

Located between Durango and Telluride in Colorado. It’s an old silver mining town which was totally in ruins. The new owners were told they’d have to tear it down and build anew. They instead restored the old town including a chapel and library and old schoolhouse. A mountain waterfall provides a background for the outdoor wedding venue. Hot Springs both inside and out for year round use – very romantic. Four miles down the road, a luxury 12 tent camp, its own chef and dining room makes a perfect take over for groups, weddings or celebrations. Whether there in the April snow, as we were, summer mountain The cabins are single rooms or multi-bedroom for families. Community dining and an authentic western bar make happy hour and meals fun and entertaining as one listens to tales of hikes, wildlife spotted, fish caught. Sunny weather or Fall leaves, it’s a true Western authentic experience.


Sorrel River Ranch and Spa

Moab, UT

On the Colorado River, a remote lodge with rafting, hiking, horseback riding. Lodge rooms and casitas right on the river. Stay there after a rafting trip, while visiting Zion or Bryce National Parks or just passing by on a self-driving trip through the gorgeous Western Parks route on the way to the Grand Canyon.

Grand Canyon, AZ

The best way to see the Grand Canyon? A 6 day raft trip through the Canyon. History, ancient canyon archaeology with the most amazing guides. Daily hiking, visiting Navajo ruins and cave paintings, exciting rapids, campfires every night, basic camping, showers and Margarita night. The Grand Canyon is so deep and magical; it’s like being in a cathedral for 6 days. Helicopter out to Vegas after Lava Falls, the most exciting rapids. Great for kids 10 and older – they will never forget it.


Rafting the Middle Fork of the Salmon

Salmon, ID

Raft the “ River of No Return” – the guides put up the tents, the bar, barbecue the food over outdoor fires and lead hikes to hot springs, supervise fly fishing and maneuver the rapids. Great family or couples trip. Perfect Girls trip – the guides even brought Cigars for my girls trip.


Houseboating Lake Powell

Arizona/Utah

You’ll never know if you don’t try it. Lake Powell has 160 miles of shoreline. Do it yourself or hire a Captain; we know the houseboats, getting the food on board and navigating the lake to camping sites, Navajo granaries, water skiing and wake boarding. Fishing for Bass and visiting Rainbow Bridge.
