Cabo Velas - A Private Villa in Costa Rica
I had the unique opportunity of visiting Cabo Velas in Guanacaste, Costa Rica this month. The 1700 acre private estate, Hacienda in Spanish, is about an hour from Liberia airport in northwestern Costa Rica on the Pacific. Easy to reach by air via Houston, Dallas, Miami and Los Angeles.
The Hacienda, a working cattle ranch on a privately owned peninsula is comprised of open fields, forest mountains and over 4 miles of beaches. There are no private beaches in Costa Rica, however none of the ranch’s five beaches can be reached by land without entering the private property of the estate. Other than the occasional sail boat mooring out in the ocean to snorkel, the beaches are used only by the of guests staying at the ranch.
Cabo Velas is ideal for multi-generational families or celebrations. It is made up of four two-bedroom thatched ranchos and a main building with a kitchen, lounge and dining area. It can comfortably accommodate 16 people. The bedrooms are located only 50 feet from the main beach Playa Cayuba and the excellent staff can pack a picnic lunch and drive you to the other beaches or you can hike or go by horseback.
There are endless activities available on the property such as fishing, even at night with my nice Costa Rican guides, hiking with a naturalist guide to view the rich and diverse bird life, Howler monkeys and Iguana. During certain seasons sea turtles lay their eggs on the beaches and later the babies run into the sea when they hatch. We actually watched a mama turtle come out of the ocean at night and head to a place above high tide to dig a nest for her eggs.
Since this is a working ranch the horses are readily available for guests to ride anytime through the fields, on the beaches or up to the top of the hill “El Morro” for sundowners.
Located about a half hour to an hour away guests can also go deep sea fishing, surfing, golfing, zip lining, volcano hot spring tours or diving for an extra cost. The Off-Shore fishing private charters, will come to pick you up from the beach in front of your villa. The diving is only a 20 minute boat ride away and pickup can also be at the ranch.
Chef David is in charge of the meals, which are included. Every meal was a delight, beautifully presented and served. All the ingredients are locally sourced and beach BBQs are also an option. The staff is friendly, speaks English and their service level is great. Chef David gave us a cooking class which can be customized.
The closest town is Tamarindo, a lively beach community with lovely shopping, beachfront bars and restaurants.
